A new, fully independent unit was proposed over an existing courtyard at the rear of an inner city terrace house.

The proposed structure was to be raised on steel portal frames, to enable clear space below for common car parking. A new covered steel gangway links the building to external stairs designed by SG2 design at an earlier stage, that lead to a main road.

The proposed dwelling was an enlargement of a previously approved project/ scheme that incorporates another storey for more living areas. The overall form of the unit resembles stacked shipping containers, clad in colorbond steel, to create a relatively secure environment for inhabitants, plus enhance and complement the predominantly commercial surrounding area.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

High-level clerestory windows maximise northern light and allow for fresh air and views out from all rooms while respecting neighbouring privacy. Operable louvres help achieve a ‘venturi effect’ to cool the apartment in summer, while northern sunlight warms internal spaces in winter.

The project gained Town Planning approval.
