Gatehouse Townhouses, Carlton, Australia, 2013
DESIGN / BRIEF
A previously disused industrial site located within off Rathdowne Street, was proposed to become an inner city residential cul-de-sac. The site is only accessible via bluestone laneways, which help give it a more secluded and exclusive address.
Seven new three and four-storey townhouses were proposed for the site, two of which were a part-conversion of an existing abandoned brick warehouse. Rooftop decks, courtyard gardens and light wells were placed throughout the development to enhance the quality of space and usability for all occupants, enabling all rooms to have access to natural light and ventilation.
Proposed materials used are predominantly masonry and metal cladding, which are both prevalent in the area and make reference to the former industrial site.
The project was granted Town Planning approval.
