A new first floor addition with associated ground floor alterations were proposed on an original 1950’s AV Jennings art deco-style home.

The master bedroom was proposed as circular in plan on first floor to resemble an observatory, and located towards city views. A semi-enclosed garden creates a buffer between bedroom, ensuite and terrace for both outlook and privacy. New stairs are enclosed by framed glass composed of orthogonal lines that resemble a Piet Mondrian painting.

The introduction of horizontal and vertical lines in render finish emphasise the orthogonal nature of the house and help to visually break-don its mass, similar to dazzle painting on WWII battleships. Since new cream bricks would never match existing, the combination of different shades of grey help create a clear distinction between old and new.

Realised works varied from our initial proposal, but general design concepts were maintained.
