Courtyard House, Carlton North, Australia, 2023
DESIGN / BRIEF
A new extension and complete interior refurbishment were proposed on an existing heritage house in the inner-city.
The site is bordered on three sides by residential buildings of diverse heights and density, which prompted the creation of a central courtyard surrounded by new living spaces to take advantage of the the site’s northern orientation for direct sunlight and cross-flow ventilation.
Consistent high ceilings at the rear are enclosed within a simple geometric form, to complement and avoid overpowering the existing heritage house at the front.
Since Planning permit approval, proposed works have been simplified to refurbish bathrooms, wet areas and living spaces, plus re-build some external areas.
Sustainable principles and energy efficient upgrades have been made throughout, including for the selection of new materials that are sympathetic to the existing house yet create a distinction between old and new areas.
