HARRIS RESIDENCE. Tasmania, Australia, 2016.

slide show gallery

The proposed new two-storey residence is located in Penguin, a small town on the north coast of Tasmania. The site has a unique setting with ocen views to the north and rolling hills to the south.

The proposed layout runs in a north-south axis and the main side wall fans out at approximately 20 degrees, to compensate for the slightly angular site and maximise views to the north, where the main living areas and bedrooms have been located. A double garage is tucked in behind the feature wall along with the main entry; this wall is to be built from natural stone and acts as a protective barrier to harsh westerly winds and afternoon sun. The first floor contains all the main living areas, kitchen and meals, to take advantage of the views to the north and south, where a large deck has been located over the garage.

A large raked skillion roof caps the house and continues the angled theme, which also helps to counteract the predominantly orthogonal and rigid nature of the overall form of the house. The main materials used are predominantly masonry, render and colorbond steel, with aluminium framed doors and windows, which complement the natural surroundings and resist harsh coastal conditions.
